> OBJECTIVES
Construction of physical, BAC-based maps of genomes of both coffee species, C. arabica and C. canephora. Such maps are of central strategic importance for marker assisted breeding, for straight-forward positional cloning of agronomical important genes, and analysis of gene structure and function. Furthermore, the construction of an integrated genetic and physical map of the coffee genomes will serve as the gateway to conduct the sequencing of the basic coffee genome. The following goals have been identified:
- Selection of common reference BAC libraries of C. arabica and C. canephora.
- Physical map construction based on a combination of BAC fingerprinting, BAC-end sequencing, and high density of anchor markers covering the complete genome.
- Integration of the physical maps with the genetic maps obtained for the reference segregating populations.
- Develop a cost-efficient strategy for sequencing of the coffee genome.
